Sustainability & Community Impact
A Commitment to Bali’s Future
At Bali Airport Luxury, we recognize that we are guests on a sacred island. Our business is intrinsically linked to the health of Bali’s unique environment and the well-being of its communities. We believe that true luxury is sustainable and that our operations must have a positive, regenerative impact. Our approach to sustainability is guided by the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana — the three causes of well-being: harmony with God (Parahyangan), harmony among people (Pawongan), and harmony with nature (Palemahan). This ancient wisdom, which is the foundation of Bali’s UNESCO-recognized Subak irrigation system, informs our modern business practices. It drives us to operate responsibly and ethically, addressing contemporary challenges like water scarcity and waste management with a deep respect for our island home. We see our role not just as a service provider, but as a custodian of the Balinese experience for our discerning clientele.
Environmental Stewardship
We are committed to minimizing our ecological footprint and actively contributing to the conservation of Bali’s natural beauty. Our environmental policies are designed to exceed compliance with local regulations, such as the Bali Governor’s Regulation No. 97 of 2018, which limits single-use plastics.
Carbon Offset Program
We have partnered with the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve, a world-leading REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) project in Borneo, to offer our clients the ability to offset the carbon emissions from their flights and ground transportation. This Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) certified project protects one of the last remaining habitats for wild orangutans. For example, offsetting a typical round-trip business class flight from London to Denpasar (approximately 5.2 tonnes of CO2e) can be seamlessly integrated into your booking. To further this commitment, we match 25% of every client’s offset contribution, amplifying the positive impact on global climate efforts and vital Indonesian ecosystems.
Reducing Single-Use Plastics
Our operations are entirely free from single-use plastic water bottles, a significant step in an industry where convenience often trumps conservation. Upon arrival, we provide clients with complimentary reusable, insulated flasks and chilled glass bottles filled with purified, locally-sourced volcanic spring water. Our welcome kits are thoughtfully curated to eliminate plastic waste, featuring items like hand-woven lontar palm leaf boxes from Tenganan and organic spa amenities from Sensatia Botanicals, a Bali-based B Corp, packaged in recycled glass and paper.
Sustainable Fleet Management
We are progressively transitioning our vehicle fleet to hybrid and electric models, with a target of a 50% hybrid fleet by 2025. Our flagship vehicles, such as the Toyota Alphard Hybrid, significantly reduce emissions and noise pollution. Furthermore, our logistics are managed by advanced routing software from GeoRoute Asia, which optimizes driver routes in real-time. This technology has reduced our average fuel consumption by over 15% per trip, a crucial efficiency gain considering the often-congested 10-kilometer journey from the airport to Seminyak, which can take over 45 minutes during peak tourist season (July-August).
Water Conservation & Waste Management
Recognizing that Bali faces significant water stress, we have implemented strict conservation protocols. Our office and private lounge facilities at Ngurah Rai International Airport utilize low-flow fixtures and a greywater recycling system for landscaping. We also prioritize partnerships with luxury hotels and villas that hold recognized sustainability certifications like Green Globe or EarthCheck, ensuring our clients’ entire stay aligns with responsible water usage. Operationally, we partner with Eco-Bali Recycling, a pioneering local waste management enterprise. This partnership ensures that over 80% of our office and operational waste is sorted and diverted from Bali’s overburdened landfills, such as the main facility in Suwung.
Support for Marine Conservation
A percentage of our annual profit is donated to the Coral Triangle Center (CTC) in Sanur, located just 12 kilometers from the airport. This world-class facility is a vital hub for marine conservation in the Indo-Pacific, an area that holds 76% of the world’s coral species. Our funding specifically supports their ‘Adopt a Coral’ program, which facilitates the planting, monitoring, and growth of new coral fragments in the protected waters of the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area (MPA), helping to restore reefs damaged by climate change and unsustainable tourism practices.
Community Empowerment
Our business is part of the Balinese community, and we are dedicated to its prosperity and cultural preservation through direct economic contribution and human capital development.
Local Employment and Development
Over 95% of our team are Indonesian nationals, with 80% hailing from local Balinese communities. We believe in investing deeply in our people. All client-facing staff undergo a rigorous 8-week training program that includes not only IATA-certified safety protocols but also advanced modules in cross-cultural communication and luxury hospitality service standards, often led by trainers from the Bali Hospitality Institute. We have a firm ‘promote-from-within’ policy, and over 70% of our current management team began their careers with us in entry-level roles.
Partnership with Local Enterprises
We prioritize partnerships with locally-owned businesses to ensure the economic benefits of high-end tourism are distributed at the grassroots level. The welcome gifts we provide are sourced directly from artisan cooperatives, bypassing intermediaries. This includes intricate silverwork from the Pande clan artisans in Celuk and rare Gringsing double-ikat textiles from Tenganan Pegringsingan village, one of the few places this ancient weaving technique is still practiced. Our direct-sourcing model provides an economic uplift of approximately 25% for the artisan families we partner with compared to standard wholesale rates.
Community Investment
We are a proud sponsor of the Bali Children Foundation (Yayasan Anak-Anak Bali), which provides vital educational opportunities to children in disadvantaged and remote villages. Our annual contribution sponsors a full year of education, including school fees, uniforms, and books, for 15 students in the northern villages of Songan and Tejakula. Our support is specifically directed towards their English language and computer literacy programs, providing skills that empower the next generation to participate in Bali’s future economy.
Cultural Preservation
We believe it is our duty to honor and help preserve the unique living culture that makes Bali so special. Our goal is to facilitate travel that is not only seamless but also culturally enriching and respectful.
Promoting Respectful Tourism
Our concierges are more than just logistics experts; they are cultural ambassadors. They are trained to provide clients with gentle, insightful guidance on local customs and temple etiquette. This includes practical advice such as the proper way to wear a sarong and sash when entering a sacred site like Pura Lempuyang, the etiquette of not pointing one’s feet at religious objects, and understanding the meaning behind the daily canang sari offerings seen everywhere. This fosters a deeper, more respectful, and ultimately more memorable travel experience.
Championing Intangible Cultural Heritage
Beyond the visual arts, we champion Bali’s intangible heritage. For interested clients, our concierge team can arrange private, respectful experiences such as observing a Gamelan orchestra rehearsal in a village outside Ubud or participating in a workshop on lontar manuscript illustration with a master artisan. During key ceremonial periods like Galungan and Kuningan, we provide clients with a detailed guide to the celebrations they will witness, explaining the cultural significance and ensuring their presence is appreciative and unobtrusive.
Support for the Arts
We commission local artists for our corporate materials and office decor, providing a platform for their work. The artwork displayed in our private airport lounge is a rotating collection curated in partnership with Komaneka Gallery, a respected institution that champions Balinese talent. This collection features emerging local artists, and a portion of any sale goes directly to the artist and a community arts fund, creating a sustainable cycle of patronage.
Our commitment to sustainability is an ongoing journey. We are constantly seeking new ways to improve our practices and deepen our positive impact. When you choose Bali Airport Luxury, you are not only choosing a seamless travel experience but also supporting a business that is invested in the long-term health and prosperity of Bali.
